Where does relevailles come from? Historically, the term “relevailles” referred to the period during which parents recovered from the birth of their child. At that time, a doula, whose term comes from the modern Greek meaning “woman in service to” or “servant”, took charge not only of the care of the baby, but also that of the mother. Her role was to help with a good postpartum recovery by taking care of household chores, meals, and other children, allowing the mother to focus on breastfeeding, rest and healing. Over the years, this practice has been lost in the West, although it remains common in some regions of the world. If baby can be temporarily entrusted, the doula can also help you with daily household tasks, such as folding a load of laundry, doing the dishes, sweeping, preparing meals or snacks for the days to come.
